The Election Made Simple

From the WaPo:

A day after an American general asserted that a U.S.-Iraqi security plan for Baghdad had failed to stem deadly attacks, Senate and House Democratic leaders today urged President Bush to "change course" and support a phased redeployment of U.S. troops in Iraq by year's end.

Democrats:

 

"The escalating sectarian violence coupled with the recent increase in the number of dead and wounded Americans are but the latest indications that neither the current U.S. plan, nor that of Iraqi Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki, will bring stability and security to Iraq," read a letter to Bush from Senate Minority Leader Harry Reid (Nev.), House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi (Calif.) and 10 other Democratic leaders.

Republicans:

 

"My message to the United States of America is: Victory in Iraq is vital for the security of a generation of Americans who are coming up," Bush told a National Republican Senatorial Committee reception in downtown Washington. "And so we will stay in Iraq, we will fight in Iraq and we will win in Iraq."

Democrats want to rethink the strategy because they are reality-based, Republicans (in the WH) want only to "stay the course". That's because admission of error is impossible for this President, but not for other Republicans, fleeing from this WH and their Iraq debacle.

This is a losing hand for the GOP, and they know it. The political pressure on the WH to change course is only going to grow, and it's going to come from Republicans as well as Democrats. Weasel words from the White House won't mask the ugly truth.

What's new here is that I heard this on the CBS hourly radio news a little while ago. Almost verbatim what you have in the post. They never used to report what the Dems were saying. Probably good for a few thousand more votes for us.

Our soldiers, our men, our children, fathers, brothers and sisters are suffering because politics are more important than their safety.

The appearance of competetence as alluded to by so called "steadfastness" is more desired than any actual capability.

I am finding that contrary to my upbringing, contrary to my religion, contrary to any moral sense that I have tried to nurture, even even contrary to my brain which sees and understands the ins and outs, the convolutions, the multifaceted surfaces of the situations and problems, ..., I am finding growing ever larger in my heart a deep and gnawing hatred for President Bush.

... my oldest brother will once again spend Christmas in that awful place.
