The WaPo has a few useful tools worth bookmarking if you haven't already. This map shows (in the broadest strokes) which states have passed legislation affecting stem cell research (see ME, restricting research on in-vitro fertilized eggs post-implantation vs NE, rsptricting embryonic stem cell research entirely).
And this Votes database chronicles the 109th Congress and its votes on various and sundry issues. The West and Northeast overwhelmingly voted to override Bush on HR 810; the Midwest and South did not.
Region | Yes | No | Not Voting |
---|---|---|---|
Midwest | 41 | 57 | 2 |
Northeast | 63 | 19 | 0 |
South | 62 | 88 | 3 |
West | 69 | 29 | 0 |
Total | 235 | 193 | 5 |
CT's 5 congress critters voted to override (including Shays, Johnson and Simmons). In fact, all of New England did (22-0).
We're not just right about the war. And you might use this Votes tool to check out your own area and see who's vulnerable on the issue this November.
We have to realize that we have become two different countries. We must secede from the South if we are to survive as a viable, thriving nation. Differences between the midwest and the two coasts can, I believe, be overcome with decent political discourse based on shared goals and long range interests. But, let's face it, the South is living in another century. I sincerely believe that the mentality and emotional IQs of most Southerners has more in common with Muslim extremists than with their fellow Americans.

Rob I sincerely disagree. What you see from Southern bloggers and Southern posters on blogs suggests a very diifferent and diverse picture than the one you suggest.

What we need are the science class grades from both h.s. and college of all those who voted against this bill - odds have it they didn't do to well.

So, normally I break regions like this:
Northeast: Pennsylvania, New York, New Jersey, and New England
South: Old Confederacy plus Missouri, Kentucky, Oklahoma, Florida
Between NE and South: Delaware, Maryland, West Virginia, DC
Pacific West: CA, Oregon, Washington, Hawaii
Southwest: Arizona, New Mexico, Nevada
Mountain West: Montana, Idaho, Utah, Colorado, Wyoming
Midwest: North and South Dakota, Nebraska, Kansas, Minnesota, Iowa, Wisconsin, Michigan, Illinois, Indiana, Ohio
Out There On Its Own: Alaska
This seems to match the cultural divides, roughly speaking. But with a four-region breakout, I really have no idea which region a lot of the states are being assigned to. Particularly the Mid-Atlantic states between the NE and the South, and the Mountain West and Southwest states. Also Alaska.
