As if poor beleagured Ernie Fletcher (in the midst of a witch hunt by Partisan Democrats Gone Wild!) didn't have enough to deal with, his lieutenant governor opted out of a second term last week, but said he would stay in office until his current term expired. Admidst speculation that Pence will run in the 2007 GOP primary against Fletcher, Fletcher asked him to resign immediately. Pence said no and Fletcher's people essentially had a little fit.
What was big time US Senator and Kentucky political kingmaker Mitch McConnell's response?
U.S. Sen. Mitch McConnell, R-Ky., who championed Fletcher's gubernatorial bid, declined comment through a spokeswoman.
Governor Fletcher today announced his new second in command:
Gov. Ernie Fletcher told state Republican leaders Saturday that he still intends to run for re-election next year, and he named Finance Cabinet Secretary Robbie Rudolph to run with him for lieutenant governor.
So out with the old and in with the...old.
What theme will Fletcher run on? Well, the same theme he's been running on for what must be well over a year now, and the theme that's about as fresh as a Difranco Family album:
"We will not let (Attorney General Greg) Stumbo and his minions run us out of town,"
If you ever see AG Stumbo in your neighborhood with tiny little men who are carrying big spiky objects (who are not working for Fox News Channel), make sure you stand firm. Or, even better, just refuse to endorse the governor:
a number of Republican leaders declined to endorse the governor's re-election plans, including state Republican Chairman Darrell Brock and state Senate President David Williams.
So basically, Ernie Fletcher is still running against Democrats, even as his own party is running away from him. And what of Mitch McConnell's response to the new lt. governor pick?
The role of Mitch McConnell is now being played by Dianne Wiest in Bullets Over Broadway. "Don't speak!" Or, in political terms:
U.S. Sen. Mitch McConnell, R-Ky., was not at the meeting. His state director, Larry Cox, said McConnell would not have any comment.
I don't know about you, but I think we should start a move to have Dianne Wiest run for governor of Kentucky. She can't be any worse than what they have now...
Thanks JamesB3, typress appears to have forgotten to credit your byline under the title.

Here in Kentucky we just keep hoping that Fletcher will hear the message, but apparently long time use of the stethoscope has taken it's toll on his hearing.
He has joined the Bush crowd in blaming everyone but himself for this mess.
The rats are leaving the sinking ship in droves.

I don't know, she was downright attrocious on "Law & Order." (I normally like her stuff, but it just didn't work for Sam Waterston's characer to be the conservative voice in the DA's office.)

Lieutenants-Governor are generally hard-pressed to make any news, but in the last couple of weeks we've had four fabulously comical and intriguing stories about candidates for this office.
You've just covered the KY one.
In Alaska, the incumbent GOP Lt-Gov declared, once Governor Frank Murkowski flushed, stood up, and said 'yes, I'm running for re-election,' his running mate said 'no, I don't wanna run again with that jerk' and dropped off the ticket.
In New York, we've just read that William Weld's running mate Steve Jacobs was one of the first donor to the gubernatorial campaign of ... wait for it ... Eliot Spitzer, the Democrat in the race. $250.
And finally in Kansas, home of Bob Dole, a former state party chair of the GOP went down to the courthouse, formally changed his party registration, and will be running on the Democratic ticket as Governor Kathleen Sebelius's running mate.
GOP Lts-Gov jumping ship, all over the map. Tell me again it's not a ladslide year for the Democrats.

The Democrats still are in denial about losing the governor's office three years ago. The Dems motto is: "if we lose an election then we'll just take them to court."
The Dems might as well accept the fact that Ky is now a two party state. If the Dems really think that they can use the legal system to destroy a republican that they cannot defeat in an election, then the Democrat party in Ky is finished.

Within the next five years the GOP will outnumber the Dems.

Tom P,
I don't take seriously any comments which include the neologism "Democrat party." We hear the voice of a man who listens to fools for comfort. And clicks on the post button repeatedly.
Back in the eighties I worked with a guy who said "if they think I'm gonna call 'em Afro Americans they got another thing coming."
That's a Dubya thing, Flipper. Pooty poot. Brownie. Turd Blossom.
Using the name someone goes by shows respect. Anything else shows a greater self-regard.
