Reading Barbara Tuchman's Stillwell biography was difficult; even her politics an obscuration of some interesting fact.
Yet, for all that, a goodly measure of history is mapped to paper.
Your work appears a measurably different genre, but the quality and specificity of understanding parallels her estimable bio of Vinegar Joe.
All of which is to say, a three part segmentation of your original single document, somewhat ungainly in hugeness to post completely in one upload, now instead has developed nicely; easily it could be a feature length article. It could be a book as well. Even if you have other life plans than being a book author, your thorough and insightful work this past week in the present Judy Embed series likely will serve as a useful stencil for whomever that historian is, in the future. An early first chronicler, as we know now, will be reporter Jehl. It is appropriate that in today's publication you are looking at the most ellusive figures in Judy's milieu in that timeframe
Excellent study, EW.
J

Thanks for the compliment, John. I'm not sure where I'm going with this. Right now just trying to figure out the links.

Can you offer a brief timeline and explanation of why these items are important? I'm getting lost in the details, and losing track of the connection between Judy's reporting, Chalabai's whereabouts, and how they impact the NY Times stories and the military and journalistic activities.

Thanks

MS,

Hopefully I'll do that more thorougly in my finale. But I think that 1) they show that the Pentagon had a plan for Judy's embed that focused as much on Chalabi as it did on her weapons hunt team (or at least, they changed her "mission" to this effect, and that 2) it shows Judy was involved in the staging of "evidence" so the absence of WMDs wouldn't be so bad.

That doesn't mean she's deeply involved with outing Plame (although the possibility that the uranium document is a forgery certainly makes it much more likely). But it does say she was not engaging in journalism per se.

It is still hard for me to understand 'who did what to whom' in the Judy and Chalabai stories.

In providing an easy-to-follow summary of Judy and Chalabai and everyone else (which would help me make sense of the information you have been developing) -- you might consider following the example of Think Progress at http://www.thinkprogress.org/leak-scandal, which lists and describes the role of 21 administration officials involved in the Palme leak and explains 'who did what to whom'!

Great work.
I find the timing of visits to be one of the most interesting aspects, and its hard to remember all the ins and outs. Didn't Wolfowitz and Rummy pop in and out of Baghdad during this spring and summer too? If so, were there any connections to other Miller or NYT stories based on the usual unnamed source? And that reminds me -- I think one of the most amazing things about the whole Iraq story is just how many "unnamed sources" there are all over the place all the time, authoritative people who don't have authority to speak, people who must remain confidential on condition of blah blah blah, who are all shilling their own versions of reality to reporters, who in turn are ready, willing and able to help them screw up everyone's perceptions about what is really going on.

While much of it is of merit, this series of articles itself is flavored with the author's politics and suffers from some amateurish allegations.

To constantly harp on some physical relationship between Judith Miller and a MET Alpha Team member, without any proof, is unprofessional. The person in question was not the 'commander of the unit' as written. Familiarity with the military would let you know that a Chief Warrant Officer is a fairly low rank, usually given to former enlisted members with technical expertise. Constantly referring to her as Judy when she obviously goes by Judith is childish.

All of this detracts from otherwise valid insight.

I briefly was attached to a 75th XTF MET in March and April of 2003. I detached after several frustrating weeks to work elswhere in Iraq.
