Something else that's popped into my consciousness of late: there are a lot of "private contractors" who've been killed. By private contractors I'm not only referring euphemistically to mercenaries hired to protect assets, convoys and people. There have also been a lot of unarmed private contractors killed, such as drivers and translators. I should go look, but the figure that sticks in my head is something like two or three hundred, including lots of Egyptians, Bangladeshis, Nepalese, Philipinos and Central Americans.

Some of these folks, especially the mercs, are there for greed. But I also have some sympathy for anyone who's there because they feel bereft of decent options at home and put themselves in harm's way, or worse, were decieved into believing they weren't being put in harms way.

I think this woman is a FOX news fan.

Cindy Sheehan is a Malicious B**ch
I can't take it anymore. I really didn't want to add to the blogs about her,
but she is a malicious, selfish, phony, narcissistic bitch. (I'm a gal and can say that)

What kind of a mother would use the memory of her own child to further her political causes?
No decent, sincere mother I know. Even her family is distancing themselves from her phony "cause."

This woman is a phony through and through, but sadly, typical of liberals.

And another shows just what "compassionate conservatism" is all about.

Her own family doesn't agree with her.

If she is in such misery, why doesn't she put a 38 in her mouth and pull the trigger.

She is besmirching the memory of her
hero son.

What sad pathetic people these are. I can understand families of soldiers in Iraq being upset because they feel that Mrs. Sheehan is belittling their service. I don't agree but I can see where they are coming from.

But these so called "values voters" and their disgusting display of hatred is just sickening. I don't know which embarrasses me more. Bush as president or people like this being called Americans.

There's a strong psychological or sociological phenomenon there, the thing about people not wanting to think their loved one died in vain. Some folks either already were against the war or turn against it because of or in conjunction with the death of their loved one. But many others stay even more steadfast in their support, I suspect because they don't want to believe their loved one's life was wasted.

My cousin is flying Black Hawks over Mosul right now. I'm not sure how my aunt and cousins would react if, god forbid, something awful happened to him. But my nephew, my step-sister's son, is in the Navy attached to a Marine air assault wing. His biggest danger is ordinance exploding as he arms the jets, so his likelihood of dying in combat is, fortunately, quite low. But I could imagine my step-sister becoming a vehement supporter of the war were something to happen to her son.

I don't know the reason for it. But I think it's fairly common.

I'd say that's the main reason. And I can understand why they would be upset with Mrs. Sheehan. But they aren't the loudest voices. Those are the New GOP cultists who are terrified that this will hurt the leader of the cult.

I happen to have a large, crazy Southern family that is drastically politically split. And I had to wonder what my cousin, who is pro-war and has two enrollment age sons, would do if either of them died in the war. She just might decide to form "Gold Star Mothers for War" or something. And what would I do then as someone who is extremely vocally anti-war?

I might write that I missed my cousins, that it was a shame that they had to die in a war that made no sense, but there is no way in the world I would ever mock her, say what she was doing was wrong or in any way deny her right to express her grief in her own way. The thought that my anti-war relatives and I would get together, crap out some screed where we claimed to know what her kids would've wanted and besmirched her and then shovel it off to the press is absolutely, abjectly absurd and so wrong-headed I don't even know where to begin.

If you try putting that shoe on the other foot, it just doesn't fit.

I can just imagine the rightwingholios hunkering down in meetings trying to solve this "PR situation". I'm sure Rove's underlinings have discussed calling in "uncle vinny" to "fix" this.

Excellent points, firedog.

How many folks will tell you that their doctor(s) is/are the best? Yet what do they go by to measure such a statement? There just are not good measures to show accountabity to what counts! The same is true in this war effort by many involved. It seems to be a protective human instinct to need to build a positive imagine around what is important to you even if, or especially if, there are no standards to actually measure results by!

these Warmongers are part of the same Gangsters, that uses part of the CIA to assasinate and murder anyone that wanted to improve the Lifes of the common man in america or for that Matter around the Globe.
Union Members(walter reuter,Jimmy Hoffa),Senators(wellstone,Tower)Civil rights leaders and rappers(MLK,Malcom X)
The THREE Kennedys,Vince Foster, the duly elected Heads of States(Hawaii,Panama,Bishop of Granada etc, etc.
Now they are still trying to assasinate Fidel Castro and Chavez of Venezuela.
These Bastards, operating undercover, telling the Chimp what to do and say, with the help of the WTO(9/11) and Zionist Mafia on Wallstreet are responsible for the Collapse of the looted America.

Hmm, I guess the infestation isn't only occurring at DKos...

Ken, don't forget the part played by the Finns who for my money are the real culprits in the Wellstone caper.

Some good comments here, like ng's and firedoglake's. The attacks on Sheehan are odious.

Last summer, wingholes who didn't know John Kerry were confidently stating what his motives were during and after his Vietnam service. And, lo, his motives turned out to be vile. Sing me another song. This summer, the wingholes who don't know Sheehan are confidently describing her motives. Chiz.

I have to admit I don't know her motives. Actually, I'm a little puzzled by her. I'm glad she's put Bush on the defensive, somebody's got to do it and as my agnostic father-in-law said last month, "It's god's work." Though I do wish lefties would be a little more cautious about putting all their eggs in the Sheehan apple cart. But she's bereft and has every right to lash out at a President who connived to gin up this war. Far be it for me to criticize her motives, whatever they are.

What smintheus said.

Oh, kudos, smintheus, for knowing that the Finns control everything on the southern shore of Lake Superior, from Marquette through Houghton and Superior right up into Duluth. They've always been my choice for the real culprits.

OK, after that, I'm going for a sauna...

The Finns have their tentacles all over the world, as a German friend once explained to me. The details are well known, if secret.

DHinMI

there are "217 non-U.S. contractors and 113 U.S. contractors" that used to work for US companies in iraq but are now afflicted with death.

Operation Milestone Millstone is counting down the days till we get to the milestone of 2000 dead americans (soldiers and contractors). it looks as though we'll cross that number toward the end of the Inappropriate Sniggerer's crawford holiday, which will be kinda, ummm, poignant.
