John Bolton, Class of 1970, Was Persona Non Grata at His Yale University Reunion this Past Weekend
Not only did 76 of his classmates sign a petition urging the Senate to reject his nomination as United Nations ambassador, he also turned up on a list of deceased classmates.
Bolton, who is very much alive although his controversial quest to represent the U.S. as its chief diplomat is teetering, was not in the city this weekend to listen to the sentiments of his colleagues.
"I was stunned," said Charles Pillsbury, local Green Party political candidate and a classmate of Bolton’s, when he saw the candidate’s name on a memorial list prayed for at Battell Chapel last Sunday.
He speculated that some practical joker inserted it, adding "date unknown" for the time of Bolton’s alleged demise. A spokesman for the Yale Alumni Office said such information is retrieved from its main database and she couldn’t explain the mistake.
As for the petition, which was circulated informally at the 35th reunion, his classmates said they were "embarrassed and ashamed" by the nomination...
Pillsbury and his former roommate, cartoonist Garry Trudeau, creator of "Doonesbury," were among the signers.
That John Bolton, he sure knows how to win friends and influence people...
