Abu Ghraib can happen here. Having previously discussed the made-for-cable Minuteman Project, it's important to note that there's an element of the right-wing US population that is not only anti-immigrant, it's downright supremacist in its actions and tone.
TUCSON, Ariz. - A civilian border-watch group dismissed a volunteer who had an illegal immigrant pose for a mocking photograph.
Organizers of the Minuteman Project said that although authorities have determined that the man did not illegally detain the immigrant, he still violated the group's procedures. They added that the volunteer had given the immigrant $20 and fed him during Wednesday's encounter.
This was bound to happen. As noted, on their website, the Minuteman Project disavows the very element they were bound to attract.
The Minuteman Project has no affiliation with, nor will we accept any assistance by or interference from separatists, racists or supremacy groups or individuals, no matter what their race, color, or creed.
Right. As if vigilanteeism is so easily purged. But why fault them? If torture is okay with Rumsfeld, Gonzales and Bush, what's wrong with a little humiliation of Mexicans, anyway? I mean, they're not even Muricans. And if the President says it's okay...
Dave Neiwert has some nice background at Orcinus.

According to this report from a Phoenix TV affiliate, this has already gone beyond restraining:
But as the sun goes down, problems keeping control of a group as big as the Minutemen begin to surface. Marc says, "There was a standoff and people got killed."
this has to be investigated further. I noted it on my site.
