Foxman, Frist and Byrd

A few weeks back I wondered if Abe Foxman, Anti-Defamation League National Director, would be castigating TX Republican Senator John Cornyn for explaining away violence against judges as, in only a slight paraphrase of Cornyn's statement, "something those activist judges brought upon themselves."  Foxman had jumped up to criticize Democratic Senator Robert Byrd for a politically maladroit but intellectually apt comparison regarding the implications for minority rights between some procedural manuevers used by the Nazis and the Republican proposal to eliminate the Senate filibuster.  Foxman apparently didn't have anything to say about Cornyn's outrageous statement.  But in a welcome move, Foxman has criticized Bill Frist for agreeing to speak at a "Justice Sunday" martyr-athon sponsored by the rightwing Family Research Council on the issue of "why the American judiciary shouldn't force Christians to render unto Ceasar that which is Ceasar's; and unto God the things that are God's."   

(Or was it Jesus, as recorded in Mathew 22:21, who issued that imperative for Christians?  Whatever the case, it won't matter to the wingers, for whom everything wrong in the world is ultimately is the fault of activist judges and Bill and Hillary Clinton.)

Anyway, it's nice that Foxman criticized Frist for agreeing to participate in that upcoming bullshit "Justice Sunday" in support of the Republicans' nuclear option:

In a strongly worded letter to the Senate majority leader, Abraham H. Foxman, ADL National director, said he was "deeply troubled" by Dr. Frist's decision to appear in the "Justice Sunday" telecast on April 24. The program's message, "...is deeply flawed and a dangerous affront to fundamental principles of American democracy," Foxman said.

"The heated debate regarding the status of the filibuster in the United States Senate is a quintessentially political contest, not a religious struggle," Foxman said. "Nor should it be portrayed as such. Whatever one's views may be on this or any other issue, playing the 'religious' card is as unacceptable as playing the race card."

Foxman's criticism of Democrat Byrd was histrionic and unjustified, but at least he's voiced some well-founded criticism of Republican Frist.  Now, let's see if the Foxman's justified criticism of Frist gets one tenth the attention of his hyperbolic criticism of Byrd.
