From First Read:
More on the midterms
A new AP-Ipsos poll has Bush's job approval rating at 36%, basically unchanged from last month, and Democrats leading Republicans in the generic ballot, 51%-40%. "Democrats also held the advantage among persuadable voters - those who are undecided or wouldn't say whom they prefer. A total of 51 percent said they were leaning Democrat, while 41 percent were leaning Republican."In his weekly National Journal column, NBC political analyst Charlie Cook notes that Bush's poll numbers have climbed up to 40%, per three different polls. The explanation for the uptick, he says, is that GOP voters are coming back into the fold. "On the one hand, these numbers suggest that Bush can pick up another point or two just by regaining Republicans who have defected since the first of the year. For the president, that's the good news. The bad news for him is that the fluctuation among Democrats and independents has been so slight that he is unlikely to ever regain his popularity with either group."
Add that to Fox's 36% and you have a President stuck at abysmally low levels. Note that Cook says what I said yesterday: minor fluctuations due to wavering Republicnas are the only bounce Bush will ever get.
Oh, and Charlie, Bush can also lose a point or two by pretending his foerign policy has been successful in the Middle East, Iraq and Afghanistan in addition to Iran and N Korea. Conservatives don't have infinite goodwill reserves for Bush and hate to see him play nice with others. The rest of us already recognize Bush as a failure.

I was doing a little research this am out of curiosity. We are now at about $78 a barrel oil. That means that $100 a barrel oil is just $22 away. Do you know when we were last at $56 a barrel oil? Last November, that's when. Just 8 months ago.
Or, take gasoline prices. They were at $1.75 a gallon when Bush made his Iraq speech in February, 2003, announcing the war that would make oil safe for America. They are pushing $3.00 in most states, about $3.15 here in CA, and I saw $3.56 on our brief July 4th vacation. When Bush took office, gasoline was about $1.25 a gallon, and crude was about $25 a barrel. It has tripled under his watch. And that is all without Iran flexing its muscles. So much for having oil men in the WH.
There are some nifty charts here, here and here.

And we haven;t even had our first hurricane. That's why the Democrats' ad scares the GOP so much.

It's a great ad. Republicans are bleating in dismay about the coffins, but, as Nitpicker asks, "Did they really think we'd forget Bush's ad?" showing the coffins at Ground Zero.
And it's a good end-run around the administration's refusal to allow pics from Dover.

As predicted, the 2Q fundraising numbers are coming in, and the Dems are on a tear. The identity of the 6th Dem challenger with over $1 million cash on hand is Chris Murphy in CT-05, running against Nancy Johnson, who has buckets of special interest PAC money. The others are Diane Farrell in CT-04, who just broke Chris Shays' 3Q record in 2004; Lois Murphy in PA-06, Joe Sestak in PA-07, Darcy Burner in WA-08 and Nick Lampson in TX-22. Many Dems are outraising the incumbents. More good news to go with the poll numbers.
