Guess who's not Mr Popularity?
The last month has not been a good one for President Bush and the Republicans. Most people have opposed the President’s proposals for reforming Social Security and most were unhappy with the positions taken by Republicans in the Terri Schiavo case. The result is that the president’s job ratings have fallen to 44 percent positive, 56 percent negative, the worst numbers of his presidency, and a drop from 48 percent positive, 51 percent negative in February (and 50% positive, 49% negative last November).
Two-fifths of U.S. Adults Who Are Online Have Read Political Blogs (April 13)
Now why would we think this is interesting? ;-)
In 2004, the relatively new phenomenon of political blogs became part of the U.S. presidential election, bursting onto the political scene. This breakthrough was powered by the fact that two-fifths (44%) of U.S. adults who are online have read a political blog, with more than a quarter (27%) reading them once a month or more. Despite the relatively high proportion of respondents reading political blogs, just seven percent of adults who are online have ever posted a comment on one. Even among those who read political blogs, only 15 percent have posted a comment.

So much for the grand realignment foreseen by the astrologers at the WH.
U.S. adults are still almost equally divided between Democrats (34%) and Republicans (31%), with the Democrats maintaining a very small advantage. One quarter of all adults consider themselves Independents.
Now this one's an eye-opener:
Only a Small Majority Still Supports Roe v. Wade and Opposition is at its Highest in 20 Years (March 3)
The likelihood of changes in the Supreme Court during the second Bush term make it very possible that it will return to the abortion issue and perhaps reconsider the 1973 Roe vs. Wade decision legalizing abortion.
A new Harris Poll finds that Roe vs. Wade now enjoys the support of only a 52 to 47 percent majority of all U.S. adults compared to a larger 57 to 41 percent majority in 1998. And the 47 percent who now oppose it is the highest number to do so since 1985.
Just in case anyone forgets what the nuclear option is really about...
Any way we can convert those negative poll numbers into some kind of retroactive substraction from his November "poll" numbers. You know, for every 1% drop in popularity over a period of three months, he loses, say, 500,000 votes in a state chosen by the Democrats?
Oh how I sometimes wish we had a parliamentary system.

so much of politics (and anything, really) is timing and luck.
Bush got very lucky with that Florida hurricane, and the months passing after Abu Grhraib.
There was an uptick in the jobs numbers in the fall, too, wasn't there? Some upward trend that turned out to be (as if there was any doubt).
oh well, there's next time.
